Assistant access

Ask your AI assistant about your reading.

KiJi works with Claude, Cursor, VS Code, Codex, and any app that supports MCP. Your assistant can read the article you have open, your stations, and your saved highlights, so you can ask about them in your own words. You choose what it sees, and your library stays on your computer.

What you can ask

Ask the way you would ask a friend who reads everything you follow. A few ideas:

How it works

  1. Turn it on in KiJi

    Open Settings → Assistant and turn on Let assistants read your KiJi library. It stays off until you do.

  2. Connect your app

    Pick your AI app and use its button: a one-click extension for Claude Desktop, an install link for Cursor and VS Code, and a command or a few lines of setup for Claude Code and Codex.

  3. Ask

    Keep KiJi open and ask in your AI app. It reads from KiJi on your computer and can point you back to each article it used.

Private by design

Assistant access follows the same rule as the rest of KiJi: your library stays on your device.

Set up your app

  1. Open KiJi and go to Settings → Assistant.
  2. Turn on Let assistants read your KiJi library.
  3. Under What Assistants Can See, choose what to share.
  4. Find your AI app in the list and use its button. KiJi fills in where it is installed on your computer.
  5. Keep KiJi open while you ask. If it is closed, your assistant will tell you to open it.

Your AI app

The examples below assume KiJi is in the Applications folder on a Mac. The buttons in KiJi give you the right version for your computer, so copy from there when you can. If you move KiJi, copy the setup again.

Claude Desktop

On a Mac, click Download Extension and double-click the KiJi.mcpb file it saves; Claude asks you to confirm, and you’re done. Or click Copy Setup, add the block to Claude’s config file (Claude → Settings → Developer → Edit Config), and restart Claude.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "kiji": {
      "command": "/Applications/KiJi.app/Contents/MacOS/kiji-app",
      "args": ["--mcp"]
    }
  }
}

Claude Code

Click Copy Command and run it in your terminal.

claude mcp add --scope user kiji -- '/Applications/KiJi.app/Contents/MacOS/kiji-app' --mcp

Cursor

Click Add to Cursor and confirm in Cursor. Or click Copy Setup and add the block to ~/.cursor/mcp.json.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "kiji": {
      "command": "/Applications/KiJi.app/Contents/MacOS/kiji-app",
      "args": ["--mcp"]
    }
  }
}

VS Code

Click Add to VS Code and confirm in VS Code. Or click Copy Setup, run MCP: Open User Configuration from the Command Palette, and add the block.

{
  "servers": {
    "kiji": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "/Applications/KiJi.app/Contents/MacOS/kiji-app",
      "args": ["--mcp"]
    }
  }
}

OpenAI Codex

Click Copy Setup and add the lines to ~/.codex/config.toml.

[mcp_servers.kiji]
command = "/Applications/KiJi.app/Contents/MacOS/kiji-app"
args = ["--mcp"]

Other apps

Most AI apps that support MCP can start KiJi with a command. Click Copy Command and paste it where your app asks for one.

'/Applications/KiJi.app/Contents/MacOS/kiji-app' --mcp

Apps that only take a web address

In Settings → Assistant → Advanced, turn on Allow connections by web address, then click Copy Web Address Setup. The setup includes a private key, so keep it to yourself. Reset Access gives you a new one.

{ "url": "http://127.0.0.1:47615/mcp", "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer kiji_…" } }

Questions

Which apps work with KiJi?

Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, OpenAI Codex, and any other app that supports MCP. Apps that only take a web address work too, through Advanced in Settings → Assistant.

What is MCP?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI apps use tools on your computer. KiJi uses it to share your library with the AI app you choose.

Does KiJi send my library to the cloud?

No. KiJi answers your AI app on your computer and never uploads your library. When you ask a question, the articles your assistant reads go to that AI app, and its own privacy policy applies.

Can my assistant change anything?

Only if you turn on Allow assistants to make changes. Then it can mark articles read or unread, star them, and save them. It cannot delete articles or change your feeds. The switch is off by default.

Does KiJi need to be open?

Yes. If KiJi is closed, your assistant will tell you to open it.

Does it cost anything?

Assistant access is part of KiJi, which is free. Your AI app may have its own plans.

My assistant says KiJi is not open.

Open KiJi and make sure Let assistants read your KiJi library is on.

It cannot find a station.

Choose that station under What Assistants Can See.

It says no article is open.

Open an article in KiJi, and check that The article I’m reading is on.

My app stopped finding KiJi after I moved it.

Copy the setup again from Settings → Assistant.

An app connected by web address stopped working.

Access was reset. Click Copy Web Address Setup again.

KiJi says another copy of KiJi is sharing.

Quit the other copy, then turn assistant access off and on again.
